Solving the Labor Shortage in the Oil & Gas Industry

The surge of oil and gas production along America’s Gulf Coast created a skilled-labor shortage, including millwrights needed to install and maintain mechanical operations.

We anticipated this shortage and began prepping to alleviate it years ago. As a result, thousands of highly skilled, credentialed, professional SECRC millwrights are ready to deploy. Each learned from the same standardized curriculum so that travelers are just as skilled as local millwrights. Our intensive training creates leaders who promote a productive and safe worksite with their work ethic and positive attitude.

SECRC millwrights are trained, tested, and credentialed for work in oil refineries, chemical plants, gas pipelines, natural gas processing units, and more. They have honed their technical skills for exploration, development, drilling, production, and decommissioning projects. They’re also prepared to expertly install, construct, repair, and maintain multimillion-dollar production and refinery equipment, such as stationary and industrial engines, compressors, and pumps.

Our reputation for excellence includes rigging and signaling, welding, alignment, and fabrications.

TRAINING SPOTLIGHT: COMPRESSORS

Our 40-hour compressor training class covers every level of compressors: Basic knowledge of compressors and how they work, disassembly and problem diagnosis, and reassembly to exact specifications.

At the UBC’s International Training Center, our Train-the-Trainer Program prepares instructors to teach the compressors curriculum back in local jurisdictions where needed. This guarantees the same curriculum and practices are consistent across the country.

ATTRACTING AND RETAINING MANPOWER

This is now a primary business objective for oil and gas production companies. By working with SECRC millwrights, you can rely on our programs. There’s no need to create your own training program, vet the qualifications of tech school programs or wait for other training programs to produce graduates. You won’t need to spend resources for out-of-state or out-of-region workers, or fund a menu of perks and incentives to keep existing employees. And you will never wonder whether your crew will be productive and safe.

ON EVERY JOBSITE, EVERY DAY,
SECRC MILLWRIGHTS AND CONTRACTORS BRING:

  • Safety: Constant attention to safety is ingrained in our membership, from our leadership to our apprentices. Safety is designed into every training program, and we work with our partners to proactively ensure safety and resolve individual safety issues as they occur.
  • Dedication: We come to work every day with a positive attitude, a professional appearance, and a determination to finish the job correctly, on time, the first time.
  • Availability: Our thousands of SECRC millwrights enable our contractors to be fully staffed at all times, which allows for quick responses to emergencies and other challenges.
  • Productivity: Meeting the schedule is key, and our disciplined, reliable crews know that fast, accurate installations are essential.
  • Flexibility: We keep projects on time and on budget using strategies fine-tuned to customer needs. We compress schedules, adjust staffing numbers, and modify workhours, work-days, and work-weeks to get the job done.
  • Customer Service: We finish projects according to the customer’s satisfaction—and we follow through with training, maintenance and customer service. One call puts the best-trained maintenance crews at the jobsite to get the system up and running as fast as possible.

OUR EXCELLENCE IS GROUNDED IN TRAINING AND PARTNERSHIPS

Led by an international Labor-Management Committee, the UBC Millwright Program seeks out industry partnerships with the goal of delivering exactly what is needed on every job. Our partners include Siemens Generation Service, General Electric (APM), First Energy, Exelon and others, all of which assist in our training by providing equipment, expert consultation, guest instructors, and more.

For example, when a demand for turbine experts surfaced, we worked with industry leaders Atlantic Plant Maintenance and Siemens to develop gas and steam turbine qualification programs to train our millwrights in the newest power-plant technology. The UBC’s International Training center now hosts a turbine-training facility with equipment from these partners for hands-on instruction.
